Kyle's farm update: Snow, strawberries and what we've been doing

Despite the weather lately, or maybe because of it, I want to take a moment to remember what an excellent fall season we had at our farm.

Our field crew capitalized on some great growing and working conditions throughout October and November by completing a lot of maintenance projects. We cleaned up the edges of our fields, prepped more fields with cover crops, and even got some touch-up painting done around the farm.

From a growing standpoint, we harvested some of the best storage crops (carrots, beets, potatoes, and winter squash) that we’ve ever had.  Our carrots really stood out with excellent flavor and crispness.  They were so good we are almost sold out!

Our growing season continues, with the greenhouses allowing us to harvest some great fresh produce.  Our salad mix has been very tender coming out of the hydroponic system. It pairs well with our greenhouse beefsteak and cherry tomatoes that we're still growing.  We expect to finish our growing season strong and pick these two crops until we close for winter break on December 31.

I also want to report that our garlic is planted and covered with straw, and so are our strawberries. Thanks to the field crew for braving the snow and completing this project!

Our field crew is looking forward to spending some time next week gaining more knowledge and insight on many growing topics at the New England Vegetable and Fruit Conference in Manchester.  Wes Thomas is speaking at the event on how Moulton Farm has started implementing a growing strategy called “no-till,” which can benefit soil health.

When we aren’t planning for our 2025 season or tending our lettuce and tomatoes, some of our field crew has been making wreaths and other decorations for Sue and Kelly to decorate for you.

It’s looking festive at our farm, so stop in and enjoy all we have for you!
